The T-28 Trojan is a training aircraft used by the American Navy after 1949, later replaced by the T-34 Mentor. The T-28A Trojan, manufactured in 1950 by North American at the request of the US Air Force to replace the T-6 Harvard, is equipped with a 7-cylinder radial engine, an 800 hp Wright R-1300 Cyclone and a two-blade propeller. It made its first flight on January 20, 1950. In 1952, the Navy requested a version adapted to its needs, giving rise to the T-28B with a 1,425 hp R-1820 engine, a three-blade propeller and a ventral airbrake.

In 1958/9, the French Air Force, engaged in anti-guerrilla warfare during the Algerian War, sought to replace the T-6s used for observation and support ground troops. Having chosen the T-28B, but not finding any surplus aircraft with the Navy, it turned to the Pac-Aero company, which reconditioned the Air Force's surplus T-28As by equipping them with larger engines. powerful for civilians (Nomad 1 and 2).
