The North American T-6 Texan is famous for having been the aircraft of standard training for Allied fighter pilots during World War II. Known as the SNJ for the US Navy, AT-6 for the USAAC and Harvard in the Commonwealth Air Forces, this aircraft achieved immense commercial success with 15,495 units produced in all versions combined. It served as an initial training aircraft as well as a light fire support aircraft. During the Korean War and the Vietnam War, the T-6 was used as a forward air control aircraft to guide fighter-bombers. It was also used by the French Air Force for anti-guerrilla warfare during the Algerian War and for basic pilot training. The French Naval Air Force also used it as an advanced training aircraft. In the field of cinema, made-up T-6s have often been used to depict Japanese Mitsubishi A6M fighters and other types of aircraft.
