Military model Saint Chamond H.
Tank WWI
The Saint-Chamond is the second tank produced for the French Army during the First World War.
It is much heavier and longer, but also better armed than the first, the Schneider CA1 tank.
Four hundred copies are manufactured by the Compagnie des Forges et Steeleries de la Marine and Homécourt (FAMH), in Saint-Chamond.
Born from the rivalry between the firm of Saint-Chamond, on the one hand and, on the other hand, from the Schneider company, it proves to be rather inefficient on lands turned upside down by the trenches and the impacts of the artillery.
However in 1918, during the resumption of the movement war in open country, his 75 mm gun is used to attack the enemy field artillery at a distance.The main weakness of the Saint-Chamond tank was its crawler gear, which was much too short and subject to frequent derailments.
