Production of the Yak-38 Blacksmith began in 1975, making it the world's second vertical, short takeoff and landing fighter in service after the Harrier.

It has a center-monoplane layout with a cut-tip delta wing and a lower contra-angle.

It is equipped with one turbojet engine and two lift engines, with the two main engine nozzles located in the lower rear fuselage and two large semi-circular air intakes located behind the cockpit and before the wing root.

The fuselage is long and slender, with a pointed head and a tapering tail.

The Yak-38M "Blacksmith" A is an improved version of the Yak-38, which entered service with the Soviet Navy in June 1985, with a total of about 50 produced.
