What is a battleship?

The battleship is a type of steam-powered warship of the second half of the 19th century protected by iron or steel armour plates. Between the 1860s and the 1930s, battleships symbolised the naval power of the great nations. Today, there are no more battleships. These battleships were developed to overcome the vulnerability of wooden-hulled ships to explosive or incendiary shells. Battleships have evolved considerably over time and major navies have constantly adapted to technological advances to keep up with other powers, with the battleship as a symbol of power, national pride and naval dominance. For many decades, the number and capabilities of a navy's battleships were determining factors in diplomatic relations and military strategies.

What are the different characteristics of the battleship?

At the beginning of the 20th century, a variant of the battleship appeared, the battlecruiser, with only slightly less artillery and displacement (if any) than the battleship, but with lighter armour, and greater speed. The most modern battleships of the Second World War were a synthesis of these two types, before being supplanted by the heavy aircraft carrier.

The must-haves

You will find the best sellers in this category with :

  • The Bismarck: the first Bismarck class battleship built for the Kriegsmarine under Nazi Germany. Named after the German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck who was one of the architects of German unification in the 19th century, she was, with her sister ship the Tirpitz, the largest warship used by Germany.
  • The Jean Bart in 1/400: battleship of the French Navy, the second of the Richelieu class. It was the seventh Jean Bart of the French Navy, its predecessor was a dreadnought launched in 1911. She was under construction at Saint-Nazaire in 1940, from where she escaped at the last moment in the face of the German advance and reached Casablanca in Morocco. Damaged during the fighting in November 1942 against the Americans, she remained unfinished during the war. After the idea of transforming her into an aircraft carrier was abandoned, she was only commissioned in 1955, in a configuration fairly close to the one originally planned. It was the last battleship to be commissioned in the world.
  • Richelieu 1943: French Navy battleship built from 1935, named in honour of Cardinal de Richelieu, for the founding role of this minister in the creation of a first French naval power at the beginning of the 17th century. The first French Richelieu class battleship, she was designed to counter the Italian Littorio class battleships.
