Product description : Seafire FR MK.47 "The Last RN Propeller Fighter"
The final versions of the Supermarine Spitfire (Mk.21, 22 and 24) - sometimes referred to as second generation Spitfires - had their corresponding naval counterparts in the Mk.45, 46 or 47 versions of the Seafire. The Mk.47 Seafire was most similar to the Spitfire 24 type, but its airframe was considerably modified.
Naturally, the arresting hook was a must, in this case of the spike-shaped variety at the very end of the aircraft.
The wings could be folded so as not to limit the use of these Seafires aboard the Navy's newest carriers.
The propeller had six blades and was contra-rotating.
The South Marston factory produced a total of 99 of this very last Seafire version, which eventually went to No. 800 Sqn on HMS Triumph, No. 804 Sqn on HMS Ocean and a few FAA training squadrons or RNVR squadrons.
Their post-war service was uneventful and the aircraft were withdrawn from service in the mid-1950s.
The only exception was the Seafires of 800 Squadron, which were used from the deck of HMS Triumph against communist insurgents in Malaya in 1949. And a year later the same unit took part in the early stages of the Korean War.
From July 3 to September 20, 1950, the unit flew 245 offensive missions and 155 ground attacks over the Korean peninsula.
