The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection operates its own fleet or tank planes, including helicopters and aircraft fixed wing.
To increase its aerial firefighting capabilities, seven C-130 Hercules are currently being refurbished and re-equipped to be able to contain more than 4,000 gallons of fire retardants.
They will operate alongside several other planes from 13 tanker bases across California and support the state's efforts to reach fires in every corner of the state in 20 minutes.
