At the start of the Second World War, the American army had light and lightly armed "scout cars" for deep reconnaissance missions. Developed during the war, the M-8 Greyhound armored vehicle, which offered better protection and had heavier armament, represented a turning point for the American military. It offered greater operational flexibility and could support infantry more effectively thanks to the 37mm cannon installed in the turret. First used on the Italian front, from Montecassino to Anzio, it then took part in the D-Day operations in June 1944. Although the Normandy theater of operations proved difficult and demanding during the early phases of the operation , subsequently, the M-8 was particularly appreciated for its speed of movement and its versatility. The M-20 version was developed from the M8 version for military police and command vehicle missions.
