Product description : Wooden plane model Santos Dumont 14 bis 1:16
MODEL AIRWAYS manufactures kits in the United States, creating distinctive models of historic World War I aircraft from original factory drawings to enable construction of the most true-to-life structural models available.
All construction elements (ribs, spars, engine, frames, cockpit details) are left uncovered to provide a striking presentation.
These kits use hand-cut wooden parts. precision lasered, cast metal and brass, enabling the construction of museum-quality miniature aircraft, just like the original down to every bolt.
Some of these models have working flight controls !
The wooden model to build of the 14 Bis of Santos Dumont by MODEL AIRWAYS:
Alberto Santos-Dumont, pioneer of Brazilian aviation, designed and manufactured the 14- bis near Paris in 1906.
This biplane achieved the very first manned powered flight, which was the first to be publicly observed. It made history as the first powered flight made outside the United States, as well as the first powered flight by an aircraft that was not a Wright Brothers.
On October 23, after a series of engine tests and high-speed ground tests, Santos-Dumont completed a flight of more than 160 feet at an altitude of 10 to 16 feet. This success earned him the first of the aviation awards given for a flight of 25 meters or more. On November 12, 1906, the French aviation community gathered at the Château de Bagatelle to witness Santos Dumont's next flight.
Despite several attempts throughout the day, it was at sunset that Santos-Dumont undertook a final flight.
After 22 seconds, he cut the engine and glided to land, having traveled more than 700 feet. This performance allowed it to qualify for the second aviation prize, awarded to heavier-than-air aircraft, for a flight of 100 meters or more. This was the last recorded flight of the 14-Bis.
Characteristics and contents of the wooden model to build:
