Built in 1783 as a cargo ship, the Bounty joined the Royal Navy in 1787 with the aim of transport breadfruit between Tahiti and the Caribbean. The breadfruit was to supply, at low prices, the slaves who worked on the sugar cane plantations.

The ship set sail from England on December 23, 1787 under the orders of Commander William Bligh. He arrived in Tahiti later than expected, after ten months of travel. This delay forced him to wait 5 months before leaving for the Caribbean, his final destination. A mutiny led by Fletcher Christian broke out on board during the voyage.

The mutineers forced Captain Bligh and 18 loyal sailors to board a boat. Bligh achieves the feat of reaching the island of Timor after a 41-day crossing.
